What Are Categories?
Categories are the backbone of Wallet Savvy’s organisation system. Every transaction belongs to a category, and every budget is tied to one. Creating meaningful categories is the single most effective thing you can do to make your Insights useful.
Creating a Category
Categories can be created inline when you add a transaction or budget:
- Tap the Category field
- Type a new category name
- Tap Create “[name]” to save it
Or manage categories directly from Settings → Categories.
Suggested Categories
Here are some common categories to get you started:
| Category | What to put in it |
|---|---|
| Housing | Rent, mortgage, property tax |
| Groceries | Supermarket shopping |
| Dining | Restaurants, takeaways, coffee |
| Transport | Fuel, public transit, parking |
| Subscriptions | Streaming, software, memberships |
| Health | Gym, pharmacy, medical |
| Shopping | Clothing, electronics, household |
| Income | Salary, freelance, transfers in |
Renaming and Deleting Categories
Go to Settings → Categories:
- Rename: Tap a category and edit the name. All transactions and budgets using that category update automatically.
- Delete: Tap a category and choose Delete. Transactions previously assigned to it become uncategorised — you can reassign them at any time.
Uncategorised Transactions
Transactions without a category are grouped under Uncategorised in the Insights breakdown. They still count towards your overall totals but won’t appear in any specific budget. It’s worth spending a few minutes categorising everything to keep your Insights accurate.
Category Breakdown in Insights
The Insights view shows a breakdown of spending by category for any selected time period. Tap any segment to drill into the transactions that make it up. See Insights & Analytics for more.
