What Are Categories?

Categories let you group related bills together — for example, all your streaming services under Entertainment, or your mortgage and council tax under Housing. Once bills are categorised, the Insights screen breaks your spending down by category so you can see exactly where your money goes.

Creating a Category

  1. Open the Categories tab (or press ⌘ ⇧ N on iPad/Mac)
  2. Tap the + button
  3. Enter a name for the category
  4. Choose an icon from the 29 available options
  5. Tap Save

Available Icons

Kwilio Bills Pro includes 29 icons sourced from SF Symbols:

Editing a Category

  1. Open Categories and tap the category you want to edit
  2. Tap Edit
  3. Update the name or icon and tap Save

Edits apply immediately — all bills in that category update automatically.

Assigning a Category to a Bill

You can assign a category when adding or editing a bill:

  1. In the Bill Form, tap the Category field
  2. Select an existing category from the list, or tap New Category to create one on the spot
  3. Save the bill

Smart Suggestions

With Apple Intelligence enabled, Kwilio Bills Pro suggests a category automatically based on the bill name and amount. The suggestion appears as you type — tap it to accept, or choose a different one.

Viewing Bills by Category

  1. Open the Categories tab
  2. Tap any category to see all bills assigned to it, along with a bill count and total monthly cost

Category Breakdown in Insights

The Insights screen shows a category breakdown chart for any selected time period. Tap a category segment in the chart to drill into the bills that make it up.

Deleting a Category

  1. Swipe left on a category in the list, or open it and tap the trash icon
  2. Confirm deletion

Bills that were assigned to the deleted category are moved to Uncategorised — they’re never deleted along with the category.

Tips for Organising Categories

  • Keep it simple — 5–8 categories is usually enough. Too many makes the Insights chart hard to read.
  • Match your budget — align categories with however you mentally bucket your spending (Housing, Transport, Food, Fun, etc.)
  • Use Uncategorised as a catch-all — you don’t have to categorise every bill immediately; use Insights to spot uncategorised spending and tidy it up later.
